The Maw

the-maw

The minute the big purple blob panted against the glass of it’s cell in the intergalactic spaceship, I knew I had to have this game. I immediately created my own Xbox live account, separate from my boyfriend’s (because I wanted the achievements dammit), and played through the entire game in one sitting. I hadn’t been this hooked since Aladdin came out for the SNES.

You play as a cute little blue alien in yellow astronaut garb, and after finding a high tech leash, you take the Maw, previously mentioned big purple blob, around a lush planet and feed him. You either use the leash to sort of swing the Maw in the direction of the food, and he laps creatures up with his tongue, or you use the leash to catch creatures and toss them into the air for Maw to catch with his gaping… maw.

The more the Maw eats, the bigger he gets. To see just how big he’s going to get is reason enough to play through to the end.

But there could have been even more reason to play the game through if they’d developed the story a little further (more…)

Dollhouse

dollhouse

I love the premise for this show: the complications that arise when you run a business that can give people exactly what they want, but at the expense of the free will of others. It puts the exploitation of science, money, and power all under one roof.

The flexibility of this premise is also part of its appeal. Joss Whedon has talked about the added difficulty of determining week to week which genre the show will be: romance, spy show, cop drama, psychological thriller. But this allows the creators to put their characters in any number of new situations and provide new insight into who they are and what they want.

Also, I love the way the Dolls allow them to play with the audience’s expectations. I was surprised when Victor was not in fact Russian Mafia, but I was shocked when the FBI agent’s confident and recent lover Millie was a Doll. That was awesome.

But even though there are elements of this show I truly enjoy, to the point where I wish more people in my office watched the damn thing so we’d have something to talk about when we don’t want to work, I find myself rolling my eyes week to week. Sometimes, even audibly groaning at my television.

Here are a few things I think the show could have done differently to keep us all completely engrossed (more…)

What's New?

I have a check written out to a certain center in Florida.  The dollar amount is high because well, I sort of failed miserably in my commitment to keep a new posting schedule.  But the rape crisis center’s renovation wins!  As soon as I’m comfortable signing and mailing said check, they’ll be in for a [...]
